Waves crash against the coast as distant surfers bob beneath the tangerine sun, strategizing the early morning’s sets. Maui? Nope. This scene’s right out of Cleveland, among a number of browse communities along the Midwest’s Third Coast. Under the best conditions, swells here can reach 5 to 10 feet, yet they draw a portion of the East and West Coast crowds.
Strong localized wind creates Great Lakes waves, with fall and winter season seeing the most action. Summertime’s moderate climate does produce browse, however it’s milder– perfect for first-timers. “When we have overcast weather condition or a cold front, you understand there are waves out,” states Michelle Carandang, founder of Cleveland not-for-profit Keep the Lakes Great.
Carandang, a longtime Lake Erie web surfer, released the company in 2021 to clean particles from her notoriously contaminated house waters while at the same time making surfing more available for novices. She uses totally free lessons in exchange for assisting with beach cleanups. Playing in the water and volunteering onshore make individuals more mindful about their everyday choices– and about the lake, Carandang says. “The more people we have involved, the more we can look after it.”
